21st Workshop on ‘Social and Opinion Research Database Project’
In ‘Social and Opinion Research Database Project’ (SORD) at Sapporo Gakuin University, as we collect and compile datasets information on social and opinion research throughout Japan, in the same time we conduct case study on Hokkaido through a reinterpretation of deposited dataset. We are creating a collection based on survey slips of ‘Yubari survey’ led by former Prof. Fuse Tetsuji until FY 2009.
It is widely reported that Yubari is in a fiscal crisis. Wondering whether we could help the regeneration of Yubari through the medium of this ‘Fuse’s dataset,’ we reached a conclusion to invite three Swansea University people, one professor and two archivists. South Wales has many similarities to the former coalfields in Hokkaido in regard to the mountainous and isolated geography and the story of having lost the basic industry of coalmining by a national policy in 1980’s. But in spite of such a predicament, they have been creating a model of regeneration through lifelong learning and the preservation of industrial heritage. We expect that it will be a valuable opportunity for considering the regeneration of Yubari and other former coalfields. You are very welcome to join us. An interpreter will translate the workshop in English into Japanese.
